THAT SUGAR FILM (2014)
Directed by and starring Damien Gameau, this documentary looks at the dangers of sugar consumption, particularly found in so called “healthy foods”.
Gameau did an experiment on himself over a period of 2 months, changing from his normal diet containing no refined sugar to a 'health-conscious' diet low in fat but high in sugar, equivalent to 160 grams (40 tsp) of sugar per day. As a result, he gained weight, grew lethargic, and developed fatty liver disease. The sugar diet was selected such that his calorie intake was not increased from his normal diet.
Assisting him in conveying the message were a number of health experts as well as actors Hugh Jackman, Stephen Fry, Isobel Lucas and Brenton Thwaites.
I enjoyed this and it made me rethink my own diet. Although shown in a simple and often light hearted way, it never detracts from the seriousness of the subject matter. This was a hit in cinemas, rare for a documentary.
